How I Beat the Malefic Ape in Honkai: Star Rail
Honkai: Star Rail Malefic Ape guide: exploit Fire, Ice, and Wind weaknesses, clear adds, and manage Monitoring for an easy win.
I still remember the first time the Abundance Sprite: Malefic Ape jumped out at me in Honkai: Star Rail. It was during the Version 1.2 maps on the Xianzhou Luofu, and I thought it was just another Elite Enemy. Then it roared, slapped Monitoring on my healer, and my team fell apart one skill at a time. Fast forward to 2026, and I still see newer Trailblazers get caught by the same trick. So here is how I beat it.

The short answer: bring Fire, Ice, or Wind
The Malefic Ape is weak to Fire, Ice, and Wind. That is the first box I tick. If I ignore those elements, the fight drags. If I bring them, it feels like a normal Elite. Blade is still my comfort pick because his Wind Basic Attack chips away at the ape while he sustains himself. But any modern Fire, Ice, or Wind DPS can do the job in 2026. The key is to have at least one strong breaker or damage dealer on those elements.

Clear the adds first, or they will annoy you
Malefic Ape rarely fights alone. It usually brings a few Abundance Sprites. They do not hit hard, but they stack up. My order is:
-
Abundance Sprite: Wooden Lupus first. It can summon Shadow Jackhyenas. If I leave it alone, the field gets crowded.
-
Abundance Sprite: Golden Hound second. It is not as bad as the Lupus, but it still wastes my time.
-
Then the Malefic Ape.
I use area-of-effect attacks or a fast DPS to clean the small ones. Once the adds are gone, I can focus on the boss without extra noise. This also stops the ape from hiding behind its friends.
The Monitoring mechanic is the real boss
The Malefic Ape has a move called Wrathful Roar. It gives the ape 3 stacks of Gusto and marks one random party member with Monitoring. That mark is the trap. While the ape has any Gusto, any character who uses a Skill becomes Monitored. So if I spam skills, I am basically painting a target on my whole team. I learned that the hard way.
Once someone is Monitored, the ape can use Simian Strike. This move eats one Gusto stack and deals Quantum DMG to the Monitored target. If I am not careful, that same target can get hit multiple times. The ape also has Fiery Majesty, which boosts its own DMG. So the longer the fight goes, the harder Simian Strike hits.

Here is a quick table I use to remember the moves:
| Move | What it does | My response |
|---|---|---|
| Fiery Majesty | Boosts the ape's DMG | Kill it faster or break it |
| Wrathful Roar | Gives 3 Gusto and marks a random ally with Monitoring | Do not panic; plan my skills |
| Simian Strike | Uses 1 Gusto to deal Quantum DMG to Monitored target | Break the ape before it fires |
| Monitoring | Skill users become Monitored while Gusto is active | Use Basic Attacks or break first |
How I actually play the fight
I start by clearing the adds. Then I check the ape's Gusto stacks. If it has 3 stacks and my whole team is healthy, I can use a few skills. But I try to save my most important skills for after a Weakness Break. Breaking the Malefic Ape removes its Gusto and cancels Monitoring. That is the cleanest way to stop Simian Strike.
If I cannot break it in time, I switch to Basic Attacks with anyone who is Monitored. It feels slow, but it is better than eating a Quantum nuke. I also keep a cleanse or a shield ready. In 2026, there are many supports who can prevent the worst-case scenario, but the old rule still works: do not let a Monitored target use a Skill while Gusto is up.
Final thoughts
The Malefic Ape is not the hardest boss in Honkai: Star Rail. It is a knowledge check. If I bring Fire, Ice, or Wind, clear the adds, and respect Monitoring, I win. If I ignore the mechanic, I watch my team disappear. So take it from me: the ape is not scary. The Gusto stacks are. Break it, breathe, and repeat. 😄
